Book Originals
What kinds of books do you have?
Please list what kinds of other books you have. Be specific!
Do you have the original paper books or are they already scanned? Maybe you have digital originals?
Please explain:
What is the percentage of pages that are printed double sided? We assume 100% for books, scanning both sides of a page. However, your case might be different. Please state the average $ of double-sided printed content.
We are interested in color space of your books. Book scanning can be done in B&W, Grayscale and Color format.
Please explain if you have specific requirements regarding color issues.
What are the sizes of your books?
Please note the approximate quantity or % of the different sizes in the project
Please specify how many pages are in one book on average.

Please explain:
Book Condition
Using your best judgment, how would you characterize the overall condition of the books? Paper quality influences the scanning process.
Please explain in detail if needed
Please tell us more about your scanned files if applicable

Book Preparation for Scanning
Our standard procedure is to disassemble the books and prepare them for high-speed scanning.
Please note special requirements for this important step. Usually this can not be undone.
Please specify what parts of the books need to be scanned.
Please specify:
Some pages are so fragile, that they are not able to withstand the scanning process and special methods need to be deployed. Some of the methods are scanning those pages in a plastic sleeve, ironing the pages, sticking post-it notes on a separate sheet etc... Please explain here in detail if this is the case.
Book Scanning
Our standard procedure is to disassemble the books and prepare them for high-speed scanning. However, some books call for a more gentle treatment. Those methods are usually not so gentle for your pocket book, but sometimes those expensive methods can not be avoided.
Please explain:
Book Block is the main part of the book that will be printed and bound. Later on the cover will be attached. As a general rule, the practically feasible highest scanning resolution and color depth should be used. Best practices show that the most viable solution right now is 600DPI, 24-bit color with JPG compression.
Please specify:
The book cover scan, spine and sleeve scan are important and need special attention if the book is being converted for on-demand of offset printing. The artwork often has to be re-designed depending on the condition of the originals and publishing intent. These part will also be printed and handled through a different workflow that the book block(s).

Image Processing Requirements
What kinds of image processing do you require?
Deskew is a needed operation because of the scanning process introduces some level of skew. In addition, there is usually a skew in the original document due to printing and binding. The first image processing step is the high quality deskew that works with color, grayscale and B&W images. In addition to the advanced detection routines and the possibility of a QC step, the most important aspect is the interpolated rotation that protects images and text characters (no sheering effect).
Please specify:
Page alignment provides uniformity for the processed pages. The process consists of a detection phase, an alignment template and and the execution of the page alignment. The detection and execution routines use statistical data that are collected for all of the pages in a book at the time of the deskew operation. A good page alignment provides excellent front-to-back registration of the pages.
Please specify:

Image Processing with Page Segmentation

Page segmentation provides the most advanced methods of digital conversion of scanned documents and books. Each page will be analyzed and broken up to image regions that best represents the original intent of the publisher or the printer. Page segmentation is a needed procedure if the documents or books will be re-printed in the future. Please see at link for further discussion of terms, methods and implementation of the page segmentation techniques.

Please specify:
These are the most commonly used image processing operations, usually performed on B&W images.
Please specify:
Advanced routines needed to address scanning and printing related problems posed by the capture process. These routines are applied to the separated continuous-tone pictures present in the pages.

Output Intent and Requirements
Please describe what kind of output requirements do you have for this project.
Please explain:
The paper documents will be converted to digital files. What will be the final goal of the conversion process?
Please explain:
PDF is the most popular choice these days, but other formats are supported as well.
Please explain:
Many advanced PDF features are supported at the conversion process. Additional enhancements can be performed to enhance the usability of the document.
