Imaging Module

Document Actions
Scanning - Image Processing - Image Editing - Batch Processing - Advanced Page Conversion

The ELAN Imaging Module scans hardcopy documents and/or imports raster images or raster PDF files. Advanced image processing, raster editing and document assembly can be applied to the digital images. The assembled document is then passed through to the ELAN Proofing Module for alignment and proofing and/or directly to the Imposition Module.

Input formats:

The imaging module is capable of handling the following input formats:
Raster Image Input Raster Images: More then 80 different raster file formats, including B&W, grayscale and color images. Examples: TIFF, PNG, JPG, BMP. Multipage TIFF files can be split into separate files for processing.
Raster PDF Input Raster PDF: PDF files which contain full page raster images. Originating applications include XEROX DigiPath, Adobe Acrobat (scanned images), output from many bundled scanning applications, etc.
The images are extracted from the PDF file in their native format without any degradation in the quality introduced by a rasterisation (RIP) process.
TWAIN Scanning Scanner: Any TWAIN compatible scanner capable producing acceptable image quality that supports B&W, grayscale and color modes, including the Xerox FreeFlow Scanner 665 via a Adaptec SCSI card.

Job Handling:

The imaging module uses a job concept with the aid of the ELAN Job Tree user interface. The ELAN Job Tree is based on a relational database where all relevant information is stored. This mechanism provides 2-way communications with the Proofing module.
Insert page(s): By way of context menu or drag and drop
  Delete Page(s)
  Re-arrange pages
  Insert blank pages
Hierarchy, list item and outlining through ELAN Job Tree

Advanced Image Processing Advanced Image Processing: Addresses the scanning and printing of mixed-content (halftone images + text) pages by grayscale processing and multiple-layer page decomposition. Features automatic or manual halftone page region selection and batch processing based on individual or common settings.
B&W input: Convert selected halftone areas to grayscale and apply image optimization and moiré-pattern removal.
Output: Multi-layer PDF image file consisting of B&W background image for crisp text/line-art and 8-bit grayscale overlays of optimized halftone images
Grayscale or Color Input: Select halftone picture areas for image processing and optimization. Convert the text areas of the page to B&W format using dynamic thresholding.
Output: Multi-layer PDF image file consisting of B&W background image for crisp text/line-art and 8-bit grayscale or color overlays of optimized halftone images

Output/Transfer:

Raster jobs created by the Imaging Module will be converted to PDF format. The generated PDF file can be transferred to the Proofer and/or the Impositioning and/or  the Printing and Release module.
