Thank you for choosing ELAN Professional Proofer, a time and cost-saving solution for conducting precise verification of PostScript files before committing them to print. ELAN Professional Proofer provides unique functionality for multiple checks of margin alignment in vector and raster formats. It also provides protection for your original document files; it automatically keeps copies of your working files separated by development stage, and then gives you the option of archiving any and all of your copies when your project is complete.

Step 1: Browse for Files to Proof

Use the Browse view to locate files to be processed by Proofer. Browse works like Windows Explorer and Proofer's Browser easily can handle large numbers of files – over 15,000!

NewJobButton Step 2: Create a New Job

Start processing a set of files by creating a New Job. You can select one or multiple PDF files as the source file(s) your job.

When you create a job, Proofer performs the following tasks:

1.Creates the job file and subfolders where your working files will be kept.
2.Rasterizes the pages of the PDF file(s).
3.Analyzes your document images, detects the page content, and calculates the margins of your original document.

Proofer presents your newly-created raster files in the Input Tree. Here you can click on a page node to display the image in one of the viewing panes: Page, Book, Sheet, Proof, PDF & Investigation.

PageSetupButtonStep 3: Configure the Page Setup

The next step is to indicate how you want your pages aligned using the Page Setup dialog. Here you can specify:

       Size of the output canvas
Sides to which you want to align your pages
Separate alignments for Recto and Verso

Use the Apply button to set a template for a selected page or Apply to All to set a master template for the entire job.

In addition, you can have Proofer notify you when a significant change is required to align a page per your instructions.

Proofer offers another time-saving feature: your settings can be saved as a template for repeated use.

AlignButtonStep 4: Aligning Your Pages

Now click on the Align Pages button to have Proofer automatically create raster files in the Aligned Tree according to your instructions in Page Setup.

To manually change the alignment, select the page in the Aligned Tree and click on Proof View. Click Apply to execute the change to the selected page or Apply All for all pages.

ApplyButtonStep 5: Apply to PDF

Once you are satisfied with the alignment for each page, click the Apply to PDF button. Proofer will:

1.Apply the new canvas size to the PDF.
2.Shift the pages according to your instructions.
3.Merge the PDF files (if you included more than one in your job).
4.Rasterize the newly created PDF file for additional validation and proofing (This is necessary only if a new page layout or processing parameter will be applied.)

This new PDF file will represent the perfectly aligned single master copy. This file and optional rasterized page images will be saved in the Output Tree.

ImposeButton Step 6: Impose

Click the Impose button and Proofer will pass the Output PDF file to Adobe Acrobat. Use the Impositioning menu to create a new PDF file with the correct parameters. (An example is provided in the User Guide.)

Important: the newly created imposed PDF file must be saved to ELAN Professional Proofer before you close Adobe Acrobat. This is done from the ELAN menu in Acrobat. Proofer will detect the new file and ask if you want to rasterize this file. This is only needed for supplementary proofing.

Printing

A special printing option is provided to submit the imposed file to a continuous-feed printer using the LPR Unix function. You can specify the print parameters through the Print menu.

ReleaseButtonFinal Step: Release Job

Finally, when your proofing is complete, click the Release Job button to archive all the files you will need for the future. You can archive the whole job, just the single master (output), or the imposed files according to what best suits your workflow.
