Setting Resize Margins
| Resizing is a very simple batch operation. PPP processes all the output images located in the Good Files List. For each image, PPP grabs the subimage and shrinks or extends it so that the subimage fits within a predefined set of margins, as shown in Figure 6-28. The red lines in the picture represent the resizing margins, which can be set up on the Resize page in the Main Window of PPP. As you see, the subimage is resized so that it touches the left and right margins. Since the aspect ratio of the subimage never changes, the subimage does not touch the top or bottom margins. Instead, the subimage is centered between the vertical margins.

Figure 6-29. This Is How Resize Works
| It is very important that PPP never distorts your images. The original aspect ratio of the subimage will be kept. In other words, the width-height ratio of the subimage will not be changing during resizing. PPP decreases or increases the image width and height equally. For example, if the width is reduced to half, the height will also be reduced to half.
| |
| This also means that your subimages will not be resized exactly to the margins you specified. There are three possible situations:
| |
| 1. | The upper and lower edges of the subimage will touch the top and bottom resizing margins, respectively. The subimage will be horizontally centered between the left and right resizing margins.
|
| 2. | The left and right edges of the subimage will touch the left and right resizing margins, respectively. The subimage will be vertically centered between the top and bottom resizing margins.
|
| 3. | Though it is very unlikely, there is a very small chance that the subimage will touch all the resizing margins, but that is a causal situation.
|
| Before you start resizing your images, you have to specify exactly what part of the image should be resized and in which area you wish to fit the resized image. By default, resizing is based on the automatically detected subimage. However, PPP can also resize a user defined area. These options can be set up in the Resize From box, where you can choose one of the following resizing modes:
| |
| · | Resize is based on the extracted subimage. Select this option if you wish to resize the automatically detected subimage. Note that the size of the detected page contents varies image by image. Therefore the scaling ratio will also vary. If you are using this mode, the scaling will be slightly different for each image. This will result in slightly different font sizes. The advantage of this mode is that the full page contents will be stretched or reduced to the resizing margins.
| |
| · | Resize is based on the full page. Choose this mode if you wish to resize the full output image. For example, this mode is good for resizing 11 x 17" scans into an 8.5 x 11" canvas.
| |
| · | Resize is based on custom area. Choose this mode to resize a certain part of your output images. This selected area that you would like to resize is called the Resize From margins. To set up these margins, open the image viewer window from the Good Files List and visually select the resizing area using the guidelines. Then click the Properties... button on the Resize tab. In the popup window, click Editor Guidelines and choose Update Margins From Guidelines from the popup menu. This will automatically transfer the guidelines to the Resize From margins. In Verso-Recto mode, you can select different Resize From margins for the verso and recto pages.
| |
| Note that when you are resizing the automatically detected subimage, you do not always have a subimage. If you processed your images in Simple mode (the Positioning mode turned off), then there is no such thing as detected subimage. In this case, your whole output image will be resized. If, however, you processed your images in Positioning mode, there was a page detection, and PPP will find the subimage on the output canvas and resize it to the resizing margins. Also note that PPP does not perform a page detection at the time of resizing. Once the images are processed, PPP memorizes the exact position of the subimage. This makes the whole resizing operation very fast.
| |
| There is one more thing you should keep in mind when you are resizing based on the automatically detected subimage. When resizing, PPP assumes that the output images in the Good Files List are not changed. If you manually edit the output images created by PPP, the resizing will probably fail, especially if you move the subimage. Remember, PPP does not perform a page detection before resizing. Should you need to edit your output images, do that with the resized images after the batch resizing is performed.
| |
| In most cases, you will want to select the resizing area on your own, instead of using the automatically detected subimage. This way you can ensure that the resizing ratio is the same for each page, even if some of the pages contain wider or taller paragraphs then the others. Note that you can even extract a column from a multi-column page. For example, if the left column is in English and the right column is in German, you can extract the English column and put it on a new canvas. Just set up the guidelines to the left column, select the Resize is based on custom area option and transfer the guidelines to the Resize From margins.
| |
| The resizing margins can be defined in the Resize to Margins group box, as shown in Figure 6-30.

Figure 6-30. Setting Up the Resizing Margins
| If you are in odd-even mode, you can specify different sets of margins for the verso (left) and recto (right) pages. To switch between verso and recto margins, use the tabs at the bottom of the Resize to Margins group box. You can use the Mirror button to mirror the current settings to the facing page. For example, if you are editing the verso margins, Mirror will apply the current values to the recto page, except the left and right dimensions will be swapped. To learn more about recto and verso pages, read the Processing Images with Positioning section in Chapter 4.
| |
| Use the Editor Guidelines button to transfer the margin dimensions to or from the built-in image viewer. When you click the button, a menu will pop up with the following options:
| |
| · | Update Margins From Guidelines: Click to transfer the margin dimensions from the image viewer. This way you can set up the margins visually in the image viewer and transfer the dimensions from there. This is a lot more convenient than typing in the values manually.
|
| · | Transfer Margins To Guidelines: Click to transfer the current margin settings to the image viewer guidelines. This way you can visually check if the specified margin dimensions are correct.
