Setting Maximum Subimage Size
Previous Top Next

Though the major goal of PPP is to find and position the subimages onto a new canvas, your job can not be treated as finished until you make sure that your output images are valid. PPP helps you finding the invalid images by checking the size of the subimage. If a subimage is larger than expected, then it is probably an incorrect subimage.

Therefore it is very important that you limit the size of your subimage. The limit can be set up in the Maximum subimage size group box (Figure 6-15) on the Page Setup page of the Main window.

If the subimage exceeds the maximum subimage size, PPP will send the image to the Exception List.

The best way to set up the maximal subimage size is to sample your images using the guidelines in the built-in viewer. First open a typical image in the viewer and set up the guidelines so that they will be just around your subimage, as shown in Figure 6-13. Be sure to leave a little space between the subimage and the guidelines, otherwise the criteria will be too tight and most of your images will fail, even the good ones. However, you should not leave too much space, because if the rules are too loose, all of your images will go to the Good Files List, even the bad ones.

Once your guidelines are adjusted, close the viewer and click the Editor Guidelines button in the Maximum subimage size group. A menu will pop up with only one option: Update Maximum Subimage From Guidelines. Click on this menu item and PPP will automatically measure the distances between your guidelines and transfer these distances to the Width and Height edit boxes. You can manually adjust these values if you wish.

It is very important that you perform this setup before you start processing your images in Positioning mode. Note that these options do not have any meaning in Simple mode, when page detection is not performed.

Though it is not suggested, you can turn off the maximum subimage size checking by entering extremely high numbers, like 50". This way PPP will accept all subimages, even if they are probably bad. You can still use the margins for detecting too big subimages. However, if the output canvas is bigger than the input canvas, and your output margins are very loose, you have a big chance that PPP will not detect the bad images at all. If you do not want PPP to perform a quality check, then you have to do it yourself manually, by going through all the images in the Good Files List. It is usually a good idea to set up the maximum subimage size properly, so that PPP can automatically filter out the bad images for you.
