Figure 6-20. Margin Settings.

You can set the margin mode at the top of the Margins group box. Choose between the following options:

·Simple: Use simple margins, the same margins for all images.
·Odd-Even: Use different margins for the odd and even pages.

If you select odd-even margins, you can specify different sets of margins for the verso (left) and recto (right) pages. To switch between verso and recto margins, use the tabs at the bottom of the Margins group box. You can use the Mirror Margins button to mirror the current settings to the facing page. For example, if you are editing the verso margins, Mirror Margins will apply the current values to the recto page, except the left and right dimensions will be swapped. To learn more about recto and verso pages, read the Processing Images with Positioning

section of Chapter 4.

A set of margins means the top, left, right, and bottom margins. Each margin is measured from the edges of the output canvas.

PPP provides two sets of alignment options, one for the horizontal and one for the vertical subimage alignment. You can choose one of the following alignment modes:

·   Keep. If this option is selected, PPP will keep the original position of the subimage.
·   Center. Select this option to align the subimage to the center of the output canvas.
·   To margin. If you choose this option, PPP will align the subimage to one of the margins.

Each margin has an option that can be Set or Check. Set means that the subimage will be aligned to that margin. Check means that the subimage will not be aligned, but the image processor will check if the subimage is inside the margin. If the subimage sticks out of a Check margin, an exception will be generated. The subimage is always inside of the Set margin, because it is aligned to that margin. Since you cannot align to both the left and right, or both the top and bottom margins, you cannot set each margin to Set. The Set option can only be selected if the To margin alignment mode is chosen for that margin.

In most cases, you can safely assume that the subimage on your scanned images has the proper vertical position. If this is true, you can set the vertical alignment to Keep mode. However, the horizontal alignment of your pages will probably be far from perfect, so you will want to set up a Center or To margin option for the horizontal alignment.

The Keep option, and only the Keep option, has some additional parameters that you can specify on the right side of the screen. These options tell the position of the input canvas on the output canvas. You can center the input canvas on the output canvas by checking the Center option. If the Center check box is turned off, then you can just specify a simple shift.

Consider the following example. You have scanned some images, and your scanner is so precise that both the vertical and the horizontal alignment of your pages are perfect, except you would like to shift all the images 2" right and 1" down. In this case, you would set up the Keep mode for both the horizontal and the vertical alignment, then specify a horizontal offset of 2" and a vertical offset of 1" on the rightmost box.

Note that there is a big difference between the Center alignment mode and the Keep alignment mode with centering turned on. If you select the Center alignment mode, PPP will align the subimage on the center of the output canvas. If the Keep mode is set and you checked the Center check box on the right side of the screen, then PPP will center the whole input canvas on the output canvas. This centering does not have too much sense if the output canvas has the same size as the input canvas.

Use the Editor Guidelines button to transfer the margin dimensions to or from the built-in image viewer. When you click the button, a menu will pop up with the following options:

·   Update Margins From Guidelines: Click to transfer the margin dimensions from the image viewer. This way you can set up the margins visually in the image viewer and transfer the dimensions from there. This is a lot more convenient than typing in the values manually.
·   Transfer Margins To Guidelines: Click to transfer the current margin settings to the image viewer guidelines. This way you can visually check if the specified margin dimensions are correct.

Note that the margins are always related to the output canvas. Although it is very convenient to use the image viewer for setting up the margins visually, you have to be very careful when the output canvas is smaller or bigger than the input canvas. Remember, when you are setting up the margin visually, the input image is displayed on the screen, while you are actually setting up the margins for the output image. This might be very confusing.

We suggest that you set up the margins by typing in the values instead of choosing the visual setup. In most cases, you exactly know the dimensions of the output canvas and the margins. For example, if you know that your output images should be 8.5" x 11" and you want to keep a margin of 1", you should type in these values. Only use the visual margin setup if you know exactly what you are doing.
