Configuring the Built-in Image Viewer
Previous Top Next

In this section, we will introduce you to the options that determine how the image viewer displays your images.

By default, the image viewer displays high quality images with medium contrast. On some slow computers, the image viewer might work too slowly. In this case, you might want to switch back to the low quality but super fast and smooth display mode. You can also adjust the contrast if you like. For example, images having very thin lines and small character can be darkened.

To change the image quality, click PPP Options... on the Options menu. Select the Image Viewer tab, and find the Image quality group box at the bottom of the page as shown in Figure 7-5.

Figure 7-5. Setting Up Image Quality

Check the Gray-scaled image display check box to turn on the high quality gray-scaled display. If this option is turned on, the image quality for the bitonal images will be very good, even if you scale down the image. This option does not affect the quality of the gray-scaled and the color images. Uncheck the check box to choose the low quality but fast image display mode.

Use the Contrast track bar to modify the contrast of the display of your down-scaled bitonal images. Sliding the track bar towards Dark produces darker images, while sliding it towards Bright produces brighter images. In most cases, you will want to leave it at 0. Note that the contrast setting does not affect gray-scaled or color images, and it only works when you zoom out. Contrast does not have any affect at 100% or higher zoom.

By modifying the image quality settings, you will also modify the quality of the thumbnail images. We will discuss the Thumbnail View later in this chapter.

In addition to the display quality, you can control how the viewer should display the images in dual mode. You can choose one of the following two options:

·Verso on the left, recto on the right (regular)
·Recto on the left, verso on the right (page validation)

Choose the first (regular) mode for general image validation, because it displays verso images in the left and recto images on the right, just the way they are in a book. On the other hand, you can switch the natural order and display recto images on the left and verso images on the right. This is especially good for page validation, because the page numbers get real close to each other. This makes it possible to validate the sequence of the page numbers with just a minimal movement of the eye.

Tips:
·For general viewing and editing, use the image viewer in single mode. This way your images will fill up almost the full screen and you can see more details than in dual mode.
·If you are using PPP as a quality control tool, or using PPP for scanning, change to dual mode. This way you will be able to see two pages side-by-side. We suggest that you use the verso-recto mode to view the facing pages in a book. Change to recto-verso mode for pagination validation. The advantage of the recto-verso mode is that the page numbers are very close to each other, so you do not have to move your eyes to check if the page numbering is continuous and valid.
